A Modern Family Garden

The back garden of this new build had become a play park for the kids with very little space for the grown-ups to relax. Indeed, the only seating area was a crammed area just outside the patio doors which the clients’ furniture could barely squeeze onto. The brief was for a garden which worked for the whole family – a nice, spacious area to relax, a large lawn area and a play area for the kids.

"The garden is looking pretty amazing!! Thank you very very much! Looks like something out of grand designs!! So impressed! All my neighbours have commented on how great it looks."

A small seating area was created just outside the patio doors with a new sandstone path leading around the house. The main patio area is spacious, allowing plenty of space for the family to dine al-fresco. The in-built seating provides ample additional seating when entertaining friends as well as providing areas to plant and add a splash of colour and fragrance to the patio. New fencing was added all around the garden to add privacy. Horizontal slats were added to the patio area to create a different “zone” while the vertical slats were painted slate grey.

The play equipment was designed into the opposite end of the garden, allowing the younger family members a dedicated area for play whilst the grown ups can still enjoy the garden at the same time. New artificial grass was added to make the garden low maintenance and perfect for the kids to play outdoors in all weathers.

The planting is a mix of low maintenance shrubs such as buxus sempervirens, bamboos, lavender, phormium, choisya and skimmia.
A slate finish was given to the borders to keep them low maintenance and keep the garden tidy. There is a bark finish to the kids’ play area.¬†Raised beds to the side of the play area provide space for the family to grow some vegetables.
